St Vincent de Paul Nursery School

Ligoneil

The local primary school, built in the 1970's had a demand for a single 'classroom' nursery school which would be managed by the primary school and accessed from the primary school entrance forecourt.

The available site was just beyond the boundary of the school in a large green area, a hill in fact, that allowed a pedestrian path from a housing development down towards the few local shops, the school and the church.

The design approach was to build a compact volume that would be robust enough to sit adjacent to the school and to the expanse of the landscape yet delicate enough to recognise the young age of the users.

One pedestrian approach to the building down the grassy hill meant the fifth elevation, the roof, was an important consideration and design decision.

An early concern was to make what is a small building programme project brightness and spaciousness.  The porch, nursery room and 'wintergarden'/play area are linked and covered by the spilt roof which allows light in, and a high level view from the main spaces. The spatial diversity and openness was a conscious attempt to offer a learning environment for small children.
